The best news ever….

if you have a two year old.

Yesterday I took down Jack’s crib.

He has been in his big boy bed for the last week or so with no problems. Every day I asked him if we could take down his crib and for a week straight, “No sir”, until yesterday he said yes. We got his little tool set all together and we were going upstairs to break it down but he got distracted, imagine that, so I did it myself. Later on he bopped into his room and didn’t give it a second thought.

The crib is gone!

But on the other hand.....the crib is gone.  Where did our baby go? I guess one of the things parents have to deal with fromthe very beginning is watching the strings to our kids slowly unravel and break away. First his crib is put away and tomorrow he is going to want to drive. Brooke and I have already decided to tell him the driving age is 25.

Best news ever part 2.

Jack crawled up on the potty and pooped! There is no down side to this one. As long as we keep him naked he runs to his little frog potty but in the last few days he has wanted to crawl up on the big seat. Thank the lord. Anybody out there cleaned poop out of a plastic frog potty before.....nothing good about it.

We had a great momma’s day. Jack and I got a big canvas from the art supply store and he choose the color and where he wanted daddy to put the paint. He had a wide brush and proceeded to paint his masterpiece. Brooke was so surprised. Jack made me a little clay thing with his picture in it from school and nothing in life is better than a handmade gift from your child. We went to moms for lunch, yes she cooked as usual, and after I gave her a mother’s day card announced, in front of Bobby, “Mom here’s your present...a grandchild.

Bobby what did you get mom?”

I never get tired of that joke......

Thanks for checking back. Do good things and we will talk next week.

Hi Jamie,

The crib down and the potty are big accomplishments!! Time seems to go so fast, I can remember those days so well. My two sons are now grown, have good careers, and one is married with a beautiful little girl.  Unfortunately there careers have taken them to different states, therefore, family time becomes more important when we are all together. Enjoy your time with Jack, believe me, it won’t be long until you drop him off at college.

Have a great week.

Jamie Deen...."a grandchild” is pretty harsh, even from a big brother!  lol:) Poor Bobby!!  I bet he will have a lot of offers for help to change that for next year, here on the blog!!!!

So happy for you AND the frog!  Poop is a big topic at your house, I bet!  Nothing like poop in a potty!!!!  As a nurse, I know these things!

Way to go Jack on the big boy bed!!  Don’t believe a word about the age to drive thing.  Check back here frequently, I"ll keep you updated, Jack!!!

The home made gifts sound great.  I bet both Paula and Brooke had a wonderful day.

How did the Sand Gnat game go?  Did you get a lot of food?  Hope so.

Have a great week and I’m sure I’ll write again!!!
Love to all y’all!

Ha! Loved your joke. Nope, that one would never get old!!

Congrats on graduating to the big potty and getting rid of the baby crib. My youngest son was old enough to bargain with before he was completely potty trained. I said one day what will it take for you to use the big potty all the time? He said he wanted a toy buffalo rifle from K-Mart. Yeah, that’s right, he was old enough to be specific which kind of rifle he wanted! Ha! So I bought it and the baby potty went bye-bye! Now I’m trying to bargain with him to see what it will take for him to graduate from college. Both sons are definitely on the 5-year plan! smile Seriously, though, we don’t mind supporting them now. They have the rest of their lives to have to make it in this big world. We’re happy to help them however much we can!

Love your blog! How about another pod cast from you and Bobby?

Take care....T.

Jamie and Bobby, glad for you that the crib is gone.  It means he really is growing up.
Couldn’t help but laugh at the “poop” story.  After all, on the “big seat” you have more room!!!!
Bobby, I watched a Best Dishes the other day with you and Paula.  You were grilling what you called a “shell steak”.  Never heard of it before.  Looked real good, though.  I don’t know if you explained what it was because my phone rang and I was on it for a few minutes.  By the time I got back, the steak was on the grill.
So my question to you is, what is a shell steak?
I know you don’t like to blog but can you answer me on this one?????  PLEZ.

Glad everyone had a good Mother’s Day.  Guys, you let your mom cook?????  I’m sure you helped her.  She does “love” her boys.

Always look forward to hearing from you.  And Bobby, PLEZ.

HUGS, Jann

Exciting news for Jack but sad news for Mom and Dad to see their little boy grow up so fast.  Seems like yesterday your Mom was nagging you about having a grandbaby.  Surprised she hasn’t started nagging about a 2nd one.

The new book is great, Jamie.  I can’t wait to try some of the recipes.  Got plenty of butter, sour cream and mayo on hand just to start, though I think I need to try some of Bobby’s first to drop some weight!  Have a great week.

Jamie, congratulations on Jack sleeping in the big boy bed!  My granddaughter is one month younger than Jack and she quit sleeping in her crib a while back but doesnt want to sleep in her big girl bed.  Grandma bought her a Dora the Explorer bed set and she loves it, but she just wants to take her pillow and sheet off her bed and go sleep on the couch!  My daughter is still working on that one.  And we are expecting our new little grandson on the 21st!  I was hoping that Kali (my granddaughter) would get use to her bed before little brother arrives.  I love hearing your stories.  Jack talks a lot more than my granddaughter.  She is still not making a lot of sentences but she gets across what she wants!  I hope your mom and Brook had a great mother’s day.  I enjoyed the show 2 weeks ago where Paula and Bobby made the steaks!  Love from your fan, Linda in Austin, Texas

Hi Bobby and Jamie,

I can’t believe you took apart Jack’s crib! and he learning how to use the “potty”. Way to go Jack!
I’m glad Paula and Brooke had a wonderful mother’s day. Those hand made gifts are so wonderful. They just touch your heart.
Bobby, When are you going to write to us? We like hearing from you too.
When is the next pod-cast going to be?

Hey Jamie,

Congrats to Jack...I know you and Brooke are so proud.  My niece is getting to that point too.  Her big thing right now, besides DORA, is saying pee-pee or poo-poo.  And when you hear one of those words come out of her mouth you know that something has happened or about to.  I never realized just how fast they “grow up” until my niece came along.  Oh and the “grandchild” joke is really not that funny....well at least I’m sure it isn’t to Bobby...lol. My sister does the same thing to me, so I know exactly how he feels.  All I hear is “your 28, when are you going to have a baby...time’s running out”. My answer.....when I find the right guy to marry. Which I am about ready to give up on...just kidding.  Tell Bobby that I am available...hint hint.  HA HA!!!!  Anyway, glad to hear that y’all had a great Mother’s day with your mom.  I had to work all day so I didn’t get to spend as much time with my mom as I had wanted. But every minute I was with her was special.  Hope you have a great week.  Tell Bobby HEY for me!!!!!!  THANKS

Hey Jamie!

Good news! That is great for Jack!
Poor Bobby, now you know that he can not top that one. Maybe one day he will.

This week has been rough and it is only Wed. Things are just not going the way that they should, but I have to tell you, reading your blog and comments makes things a little easier for a short period of time. Thank you for that Jamie.

I have been trying to get in touch with that brother of yours, do you think you could help me out?????? It is not like you don’t see him everyday! lol

Have a great week and talk to ya next week. Thanks for blogging Jamie!

Happy Wednesday!

So glad to hear that everybody had a great Mother’s Day!  Last year was the best Mother’s Day for us, because our beautiful baby boy Seth was born!  We had his 1st B-day Party on Saturday and let me time I understand wondering where that precious little baby went!  I am sure your Momma cooked some great fixins! Well hope you have a great week and look forward to the next blog!

How great for Jack (and you and Brooke)!  My niece of almost two and a half was thrilled to tell me recently that she went pee in the potty.  She exhibited such joy from the triumph.  But not nearly as much as her parents!  Particularly because they have another baby on the way so the had the added hope of less diapers to change (and purchase).

I have to agree with some of the other posters.  Your little joke was a bit mean.  Maybe some day down the road he will return the ‘favor’ by saying, “Mom here’s your present...a grandDAUGHTER.  By the way, Jamie, what did you get mom?”

Bobby:  Things will happen when they are suppose to and if they are suppose to.  Sometimes older brothers just don’t know when to stop picking on younger siblings.  I know, I have two.  But, thank God they always seem to ‘have your back’.

Way to go Jack!

I thought of you on Sunday as I disassembled my son’s crib, wondering if “no crib” would go well, but we didn’t have much choice.  It was a safety hazard.  He had no trouble entering and exiting his crib as he pleased; a serious injury would be just around the corner, I’m sure!

Best of luck to Jack and his attempts at the potty (it’s going so-so for us).

Hi Jamie,

Ahh the sibling vs sibling and humor. I love my older brother most days too. Bobby just remember Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. And while I am happily married for 18 years there are some days that I will hear my wonderful husband tell my single sister that you have two choice in life: “You can stay single and be miserable, or get married and wish you were dead”. I did say happily married, right? :D Actually he’s lucky to be married, I would have hated for him to continue to go through life thinking he had no faults!

Jamie, congrats on the big boy bed and potty. That is such a milestone for Jack. My son thought he was something once he started wearing the big boy undies; Nemo, Bob the Builder, Spongebob...boys are so darn cute!

Have a great week!

The time fly’s cherish every last minute you can!! Next will be girls and broken hearts, and can’t forget sports!! Sounds like you are truly embracing fatherhood.. Great job!!

Jamie…
No way did I want to imply that you were mean to Bobby, but I do love him too and felt a stab with the whole Jack comment!  I never had kids, so my big brother was the one to give my parents the granbabies!  I mean....how can he ever top the first grandbaby?  I know, you can’t…
Any way....I know you were just being the big brother, and you must kid the baby brother, it’s in the manual! LOL smile
I know you will always have Bobby’s back and he, yours!

Hi Jamie ~

The little one is growing up. You had me reflecting this morning, so I will share my thoughts with you.

Each stage of development is both exciting and sad. Your buddy is growing up so fast. All those baby moments will be placed on a shelf next to his photos in the silver frames.

However, you are entering into another fun stage - let’s face it, each one will be exciting and thrilling, as well as difficult and annoying.  He will be so sweet, adoring, carefree and fantastic. Everything daddy and mommy does is golden. He will listen to every one of your words and absorb them like a sponge. He wants nothing more than to please his parents.  You will want nothing more for him than to feel safe, loved and happy. You will be his hero. Brooke will be his first love.

One of the best things about having children, is getting to be a kid again yourself - of course!

Playing all the games you loved, as well as, finding new ones. There are the board games, cards, puzzles, etc. Truthfully though, the best ones are - the trains, remote control cars and Hot Wheels - pretty much anything with a wheel.

Then, it’s fishing, boating, camping, hiking, biking, in-line skating, skateboarding, dirt bikes, motorcycles and then the magnificent car.
So get those knee and elbow pads ready, a ton of patience and understanding - you will need it - and have fun! I realize I took you from 2 to 16 in a flash, but that’s how fast it will be.  That is what I’ve been told. My ten years old sons are trying to be 14 and I’m not ready for that. I say to them - enjoy each day, life goes by so quickly.

Another special part of having children is, they allow us to re-live moments that were special to us, which will someday be special to them. Creating new experiences and memories that we may not have had as children, that will one day be appreciated. Making all of it such a fabulous life, they will cherish it and want to pass it along.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I would like to thank my mom for everything she did for us. She worked so hard and sacrificed even more. She taught us that you can’t have everything and we should appreciate what we do have.  Love and Family - they will always be there.  Thank you mom.  I wish I could hug you again.

Have a super week! - we will be waiting for more potty training stories.

Congrats on the crib and potty! That’s great! Sounds like Jack and my nephew (2) have the same potty. What little boy wouldn’t like peeing on a frog? lol Just make sure he doesn’t get distracted. He might decorate the wall.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!
Bobby--I wouldn’t let Jamie get away with that!:)
Although, something tells me you can hold your own.

I have a son, Jackson, who’s 18 months old. I love being a stay at home mom, but have thought recently about sending him to a childcare facility a couple days a week. Hearing about your Jack making gifts for you at school is precious! Maybe my Jackson will do something like that for me.

Thanks for opening up and being so candid about your life as a family man and a business man. It’s fun to read!

It does seem like Jack is Growing Up! It may be a little sad to take down the crib but the potty part is great. I knoe Brooke was really happy over this one. I, like Paula enjoy the fun part of it all, being a Grandmother! I have four, ages 13,7,4, and 2. They are all a bunch of fun.
It was a thrill to get to see You and Bobby this past Tuesday and get my picture made with you! My daughter could not believe me when I called her and told her. The first thing she asked,” are they as cute in person?” You and Bobby have a lot of you admirers out there!
Be good and have a gooc week!!!

Jamie ~ love the blog every week and catching up with y’all. Thanks for sharing the highs and lows of restaurant and personal life that your family encounters on a regular basis.

Did think that you were a tad bit harmlessly tough on Bobby though with the baby comment.  Poor guy is probably just trying to do it right like you ~ love, marriage, baby carriage.

Hang tough, Bobby, love’s a comin’.

Congratulations on the crib take down.  Some days I wish I had a large beautiful crib for myself to escape to. I saved my daughter’s crib as it is too lovely to get rid of......I am actually saving it for grandchildren.  I am forty like you are and started my family late, so I will be like 80 when I reassemble the crib. My daughter is 3 and boy is 5.  We all met your mother and Michael in Atlanta on the book tour.  Lovely people......were so kind to my children and my husband and me.  I am with you on the unraveling of the strings.  I still get emotional when I drop of my boy at kindergarten some days.  These years the kids just think the world of you and they love you so much!  I have a husband who flies 7 on 7 off so that wears on me at times....but parenthood is still the hardest BEST thing I have ever done!  As far as the potty training......some other mothers drive me nuts with their Nazi ideas on bathroom expedience.......does it matter if your child is 1 or 4 when they finally do their business without us?  They do it when they are ready and no shaming them is my thing.  By the way.....I loved the video brunch comment about the “husky” pants from Sears.....did you used to wear the Tough Skin pants that if you got a hole in the knee mom would iron on a patch about 100 times?  I grew up in San Francisco Bay Area, but I bet you were wearing the Tough Skins in the south too.  I am reading your mom’s tell all book.  I love it so much...makes me laugh, cry and wish I had a family like you all!  Happy Summer to you and your entire family Jamie! Sincerely Marsha

Jamie..another question for you. Where in the world do you park while you are at the rest.?
We had a hard time trying to find parking while we were in town last time.
I was reading on the site that you do not have to pay for parking (meters) after 5 during the week or on the weekends, is that everywhere downtown?
With that said, it is really hard to find parking downtown.

Thanks again Jamie, talk to ya soon.

Hey Jamie,
Tired of the rain yet?  And I just returned from Seattle - and the weather was better there.  Currently in Chicago for another business meeting - just had a great dinner at Martini Party.  Very much looking forward to being home Memorial Day week and spending some time on the beaches of Tybee.

The good news - I was able to get on the golf course Sunday morning and was able to get through 11 holes before the sky opened up.  Played Henderson for the first time - nice course.  Par’d the first 4 holes and then blew it on the last 3 - scored a 50 on the first 9 and then got rained out on the 11th.  Man I love being on the golf course.  Ok - not sure I got my question in early enough last week.  So what is your favorite golf memory?

Hope you are having a great week.

Congrats Jamie on your little boy becoming a “big” boy!! That is so sweet and I am so glad to know that you are teaching Jack to say “yes sir” etc. It’s nice to know that some children will grow up to respect their elders, because the ones I hear today don’t. (95% of them anyway)
But ya’ll are good role models so I am not surprised!! Saw the “ICBINB” commercial, ya’ll cracked me up..not so much the words, just the fact that ya’ll are Paula “Butter Queen” Deens youngins!! Too cute. Still waiting to see ya’ll in your own cooking show again!
Have a great week, keep doing good!
